The quiet way to reduce student numbers?

The motive for current UK government increasing the student fees could originate from the realisation that too many students are going to university. These policy changes are a convenient way to achieve the desired result - elitism and a reduced total number of students - without directly stating this as an objective.

The government have probably realised that the previous policies geared towards increasing the percentage of the population in further education are not achieving the desired outcomes. This is because there are a finite number of high achievers, and these students were already obtaining places. By increasing the number of young people going to University, standards have fallen and students are being awarded very expensive qualifications with have less intrinsic value than ever.

Jules Verne From the Earth to the Moon

Well its not quite KS2 but I just finished reading From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne, written in 1865. It has numerous astounding insights into the practicalities of space travel (cold, oxygen, carbon dioxide, take off/landing etc).

This text occurs just as the 3 passengers of the simple space craft are flying past the moon, not knowing if they are flying out into the depths of space, crashing into the surface or orbiting it forever.

Imagination loses itself in this sublime Infinity, amid which the projectile was gravitating, like a new star created by the hand of man. From a natural cause, these constellations shone with a soft luster; they did not twinkle, for there was no atmosphere which, by the intervention of its layers unequally dense and of different degrees of humidity, produces this scintillation. These stars were soft eyes, looking out into the dark night, amid the silence of absolute space.

Fayim's Journey

I just added a new worksheet to the Oxford Reading Tree comprehension exercises list. The questions are about Fayim's Incredible Journey, a fascinating story about an eight year old who embarks on a long and dangerous journey from Afghanistan to Pakistan over the Khyber pass. The story highlights how ordinary families with children are affected by the war in Afghanistan and is told through the fears of a young child. The story ends with the generous work of the Brooke Hospital
